Hello! We are ROKS Walks, a group of Year 5 and Year 10 students who are collectively committing to walk the 62km trail around Hong Kong Island as part of WEEZ Walk 2022. Our main objective behind this challenge is to raise awareness for youth mental health, and raise funds to expand access to resources for mental health and suicide prevention.
The South China Morning Post reported in May 2019 that 18 children between the ages of 11 and 17 had tragically taken their own lives in Hong Kong in the last 2 years. Furthermore, The World Health Organisation reported in November 2021 that suicide is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide for students between the ages of 15 and 19. Three of us are turning 15 this year, and we want to help raise awareness for youth mental health and suicide, to save innocent lives from being lost at early ages.
West Island School, where 3 of us (Olive, Rose, and Sahana) study, has emphasised the importance of good mental health. Resources, like school counsellors, and strategies to reduce stress and exam anxiety, are made available to students. At DSC International School, where Kahaan studies, similar webinars and awareness initiatives are held with organisations like Cool Minds, to tell parents about strategies to support good mental health.
We are very fortunate to have access to these support systems, and we believe this should be extended to all teens and youth. All proceeds raised from our walk will help the KELY Support Group achieve this goal.
The KELY Support Group is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organisation that collaborates with schools and other partners to offer programmes to youth between the ages of 14 and 24. These funds will be used to create programs that will focus on increasing awareness of youth mental health, with a particular emphasis on suicide prevention.
Thank you for your support!
